The discussion on Thursday’s episode of CNN’s “NewsNight With Abby Phillip” took an unexpected turn when a guest criticized a conservative pundit’s remarks as “disgusting” and “abhorrent.”
The debate centered on the Supreme Court’s decisions earlier that day, which allowed the Trump administration to deny asylum-seekers entry at the border and to end temporary protected status for some foreign nationals. Amanda Litman, co-founder of the progressive group Run for Something, expressed that this decision was a “devastating” way to approach the 250th anniversary of America, by expelling the individuals who contribute to the nation’s greatness.
She described these individuals as “immigrants who arrive and decide to settle in places like Springfield, Ohio, bringing skills as doctors or engineers.”
Caroline Sunshine, deputy communications director for Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, interrupted to challenge this view by asking, “Was the Haitian migrant who caused the death of 11-year-old Aiden Clark improving America with that action?”
Sunshine referred to the tragic death of a Springfield, Ohio, boy in a 2023 school bus crash involving a minivan driven by a Haitian immigrant. Some on the right had used this incident in their anti-immigration rhetoric, despite Clark’s father publicly urging people not to exploit his son’s death for spreading hate.
Keith Boykin, a former aide to President Bill Clinton, countered Sunshine by stating, “That was one case. Are you going to expel 350,000 people because of a single incident?”
Sunshine responded, “He killed a child. Does that make America better? That’s not my idea of improvement.”
Boykin retorted, “Would you expel 350,000 individuals based on one stereotype? What about the white individuals who commit crimes here? Would you expel them as well?”
Boykin further stated, “Your comment is as racist as Donald Trump’s. Using a single Haitian individual as a reason for a racist foreign policy is disgusting. It’s abhorrent.”
Sunshine replied, “It’s disgusting that an 11-year-old was killed by a Haitian migrant who crashed into a bus. That is the real outrage.”
Boykin concluded, “That incident exemplifies what MAGA represents: racism.”
Phillip then ended the discussion.
