The anticipated legislative maneuver regarding the Epstein files has taken an unexpected turn. Initially, the plan was for Speaker Mike Johnson to usher the bill through the House, after which Majority Leader John Thune was expected to stymie its progress in the Senate, citing the need for corrections and revisions.

This strategy seemingly aimed to trap the bill in a bureaucratic quagmire, effectively preventing the release of the files. However, in a surprising twist, Chuck Schumer swiftly moved to expedite the bill’s passage through unanimous consent. To the astonishment of many, not a single Republican raised an objection, leading to its swift approval in the Senate and subsequent delivery to Trump’s desk.

…

This retaliatory plan—a familiar play from the Trump playbook—will serve as a litmus test for whether the former president still possesses the political clout to intimidate dissenters and impose consequences on challengers. This comes at a time when speculation is rife regarding the president’s waning influence within the GOP, potentially signaling an approaching lame duck phase.

Speaker Mike Johnson’s confidence in the Senate’s ability to bury this bill has proven misguided.
