State House Speaker Lisa Demuth emerged victorious in the Republican primary for Minnesota governor on Tuesday, defeating Mike Lindell, the former CEO of MyPillow, who was backed by President Donald Trump.
This outcome represents a significant setback for Trump due to his strong ties with Lindell, who has been a fervent supporter of the president, particularly in promoting the unfounded claim that the 2020 election was rigged.
Demuth, who is considered a more moderate Republican compared to Lindell, is set to challenge Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar in November. Klobuchar faced little competition in her primary race.
Republicans are optimistic that a fraud scandal involving Democratic Governor Tim Walz could provide an opportunity in the predominantly Democratic state. With Demuth’s triumph over Lindell, Republicans believe they have a stronger candidate to capitalize on this issue. However, Klobuchar’s strong track record in past statewide elections and a national environment favorable to Democrats present significant challenges to overcome.
