In a stunning exhibition of self-unawareness, Donald Trump showcased his penchant for self-aggrandizement during the White House Easter Egg Roll, where he addressed an audience of children, families, and, of course, the Easter Bunny.
Video:
Trump began with:
âThank you very much, everybody, and a very happy Easter to everyone. It was a beautiful day yesterday and itâs a beautiful day today. We donât have to worry about sunburn, but it looks like itâs not going to rain. Itâs going to be really something special. 40,000, 42,000 people are expected all throughout the day, and itâs an honor to have you.â
âI just signed an executive order putting all federal and state flags at half-mast in honor of Pope Francis. He was a good man who worked hard and loved the world, and itâs an honor to do that. I want to thank everybody for being here. This band is something special.â
âIâve heard this band indirectly for four years and very directly now for four and a half. And I like the direct method even better, but the Marine Corps band is truly exceptional. Thank you very much for the great job. I also want to thank the National Park Service for making everything so beautiful and tidy, and Iâm very picky about that.â
âI will tell you, theyâve done an incredible job. Just look around and see. And a special thank you to our great First Lady who organized this entire event. She worked very hard on it.â
âShe worked very hard. I said, âWhat are you doing?â She said, âIâm working on the egg roll.â I said, âThat sounds like a lot of fun, and weâre going to have a lot of fun in just a couple of minutes. But again, our country is doing very well. We had the highest number of military recruits and enlistments in 28 or 29 years, and Iâm sure weâre going to beat that number.â
âItâs all happened since November 5th. Enrollment in the military is at a record high, and so is enrollment in law enforcement. Just six months ago, we couldnât get anyone, and now weâre setting records.â
âThatâs a testament to whatâs happening in terms of the spirit of our country. We love our country, and itâs something very special.â
âAnd speaking of special, Easter is special. Itâs one of our favorite days. Weâre honoring Jesus Christ and weâre going to honor Him very powerfully throughout our lives. Weâre bringing religion back into America.â
âWeâre bringing a lot of things back, but religion is coming back to America. Thatâs why you see the incredible spirit and numbers. So, weâre going to come down and join you right now. But I just want to wish everybody a happy Easter once again and enjoy your lives.â
âWeâre going to have a great four years.â
The highlight of the event was the visible confusion of the White House staffer in the Easter Bunny costume, who transitioned from cheerfully waving at children to a look of disbelief as Trump rambled on about lowering flags in honor of Pope Francis.
However, the remainder of Trumpâs comments were a curious blend of exaggerations and nonsensical statements. A recent Pew survey indicates that a majority of Americans now view religion as less significant in their lives.
It seems Trump may be conflating his hopes that his trade policies wonât decimate your 401(k) or cost you your job with genuine faith and spirituality.
The surge in military recruitment actually occurred during Biden’s last year in office and has no direct correlation to Trump’s actions.
Notably absent from Trumpâs remarks were any references to economic concerns or rising grocery prices. His commentary felt rather sparse on substantial topics, leaving the Easter Bunny in a state of bewilderment.
