President Trump made a bold move on Thursday when he directed his sons to fire an outside ethics counsel for the family business due to his representation of Harvard University. The lawyer in question, William A. Burck, was let go because of his ties to Harvard, which had recently sued the Trump administration over funding threats.

In a social media post, President Trump criticized Mr. Burck’s association with Harvard, calling the university a “threat to Democracy.” He urged his sons, who now run the Trump Organization, to remove Mr. Burck from his position immediately. Eric Trump confirmed the decision, stating that they saw it as a conflict of interest.

Mr. Burck, a seasoned lawyer in Washington who had represented Trump administration officials in the past, declined to comment on the situation. This move highlighted the complex relationship between the Trump presidency and his private company, as well as President Trump’s willingness to target those he believes have wronged him.

The decision to part ways with Mr. Burck was not taken lightly, as he had been instrumental in advising the Trump Organization on ethical matters and potential new business deals. However, when he took on Harvard as a client without consulting the company, it raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

Legal ethics expert Stephen Gillers noted that Mr. Burck’s involvement in a lawsuit against the Trump administration posed a problem that was likely to upset President Trump. Ultimately, it was deemed prudent for Mr. Burck to step away from the situation.

Quinn Emanuel, the law firm where Mr. Burck is a comanaging partner, has been involved in other high-profile cases with implications for the federal government. From representing clients with corruption charges to undocumented immigrants facing deportation, the firm has navigated complex legal issues under Mr. Burck’s leadership.

Overall, the decision to sever ties with Mr. Burck underscores the challenges of balancing legal representation with political sensitivities in the current climate. As the Trump Organization moves forward, it will be essential to reassess its ethical considerations and ensure adherence to legal standards.
