President Trump’s Envoy Plans Summit with Ukrainian Officials in Saudi Arabia
WASHINGTON — President Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, announced plans for a summit meeting next week with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia to discuss a potential cease-fire with Russia.
“We’re currently in talks to organize a meeting with the Ukrainians in Saudi Arabia. The goal is to establish a framework for a peace agreement and an initial cease-fire,” Witkoff stated during a press briefing on the White House driveway.
The meeting aims to revive US-Ukrainian dialogue following the Trump administration’s decision to suspend the provision of weapons and intelligence to Kyiv after a controversial Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last Friday.
Zelensky’s opposition to a temporary cease-fire at the meeting reportedly angered President Trump.
“We can’t just talk about a cease-fire endlessly. It won’t be effective,” Zelensky asserted during the meeting.
President Trump responded by saying, “If you could secure a cease-fire now, I assure you that you would take it, so that the bullets stop flying and your soldiers stop losing their lives.”
