President Trump Fires Democratic FTC Commissioners, Setting Up Legal Challenge

President Trump made headlines on Tuesday as he took the controversial step of firing the two Democratic members of the Federal Trade Commission. This move has sparked a legal challenge due to a longstanding Supreme Court precedent that limits the president’s ability to dismiss FTC commissioners without “good cause.”

According to a report by The New York Times, the White House terminated commissioners Rebecca Kelly Slaughter and Alvaro Bedoya earlier in the day. In response, Slaughter condemned the firings, calling them “illegal.”

In a statement, Slaughter asserted, “Today the president illegally fired me from my position as a federal trade commissioner, violating the plain language of a statute and clear Supreme Court precedent. Why? Because I have a voice. And he is afraid of what I’ll tell the American people.”

The Federal Trade Commission, established in 1914, plays a crucial role in enforcing consumer protection and antitrust laws. With typically five members on the commission, the Trump administration’s actions have raised concerns about its approach to independent regulatory agencies like the FTC.
