WASHINGTON — President Trump paid tribute to Charlie Kirk during a Rose Garden ceremony marking what would have been his 32nd birthday, with his widow Erika indicating he may have pursued a presidential run.
Trump, 79, referred to the assassinated conservative leader as a “martyr” deserving recognition alongside some of history’s most notable figures.
“Charlie Kirk exemplified the fight for truth and freedom,” the president remarked. “From Socrates to Saint Peter, Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King, those who have profoundly altered history — and he certainly did — have taken great risks for the ideals they championed.”
He further shared that the slain Turning Point USA co-founder was “looking down on us today” amid the pleasant fall weather in Washington.
“We have witnessed countless far-left extremists resorting to violent acts because they recognize that their beliefs are failing to persuade anyone,” the president stated.
“They embody a misguided ideology that is collapsing, and they know it. Their desperation leads to violence.”
Tyler Robinson, 22, is charged with killing Kirk on September 10 during an event at Utah Valley University, reportedly due to a disagreement with the activist’s political stance.
Trump mentioned to those gathered that he “raced back” from the Middle East specifically for the event.
“I hurried back halfway around the world. Initially, I considered calling Erika to suggest postponing until Friday,” Trump explained, having returned to Washington around 3 a.m. Tuesday after stopping in Israel and Egypt to solidify the Israel-Hamas peace deal.
“I didn’t have the heart to make that call,” he continued. “But you know why? Because I learned that today was Charlie’s birthday … So I decided to prioritize this occasion over engagements with some of those wealthy nations that expected my presence.”

“He should be celebrating his 32nd birthday,” Trump remarked about Kirk.
“When I first encountered him, he was just 22, and I thought, ‘He seems older than that.’ He had something special about him. Yet instead, Charlie is achieving a far more significant milestone. We are now enshrining his name among the true heroes of America for eternity.”
Trump also highlighted how Kirk’s death underscores the need for voters to turn away from Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones, following his shocking fantasies of violence against Republican colleagues.
“We’ve seen a candidate for attorney general in Virginia boast about wanting to see a Republican legislator shot in the head, including threats against his children. These declarations were made publicly,” Trump stated.
“Yet he continues his campaign, with many still supporting him. It’s quite astonishing. That’s a serious issue. We’ll see how this unfolds, but it’s unacceptable.”
“Nobody’s heard such alarming rhetoric before,” the president added. “In light of Charlie’s assassination, it is crucial that our nation exhibits zero tolerance for radical left violence, extremism, and terror.”
Erika Kirk recounted how her husband cherished simple birthday celebrations with mint chocolate chip ice cream.
“Mr. President, for the past seven and a half years, I have struggled to find the perfect birthday present for Charlie. It hasn’t been easy,” she shared.
“For those with loved ones, you understand the challenges of selecting a meaningful gift, especially when they are not materialistic. It adds to the difficulty.
“But today, I can confidently tell you, Mr. President, that you have given him the most extraordinary birthday gift he could ever receive.”
Erika, who read a heartfelt message from their young daughter extending birthday wishes, reflected that Charlie “might have considered running for president” had he lived past last month.
“He would have sacrificed anything to protect freedom for all. If the time had come, he might have stepped up to run for president, but not from a place of ambition,” she said.
“He would have done it solely because he believed it was necessary for the country, from a genuine desire to serve. Though Charlie lived only 31 brief years on this earth, he filled every moment with purpose and stood for truth, even when it was unpopular.”
