Ontario Premier Doug Ford seems to be playing a high-stakes game of geopolitical poker with the United States, and the stakes are rising alarmingly. Last week, he issued a chilling threat to cut off electricity supplies to American states, including New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, a move that could have dire consequences for millions of residents.
As detailed by , Ford not only hinted at this drastic measure but also declared a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the U.S., a move that could send shockwaves through the regional economy. “We keep the lights on for 1.5 million homes in manufacturing in New York, Michigan, and Minnesota,” Ford told NBC News. “If he wants to destroy our economy and our families, I will shut down the electricity going down to the U.S. And I’m telling you, we will do it.”
In a move that aligns with his fiery rhetoric, Ford enacted the new tax on electricity while once again reiterating his threat to plunge millions of Americans into darkness.
Unsurprisingly, former President Trump responded with characteristic vigor on Truth Social. In an announcement that could rival a dramatic political thriller, he unveiled plans to impose an additional 25% tariff on aluminum and steel imports from Canada, raising the total tariff to a staggering 50%. He also demanded that Canada eliminate its hefty dairy tariffs on U.S. farmers, which he described as egregious.
“Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on ‘Electricity’ coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, making it 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” Trump declared with palpable indignation. “This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th. Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous.” Trump also hinted at declaring a National Emergency regarding electricity in the affected areas, citing the need to swiftly address what he termed an “abusive threat” from Canada.
In a particularly dramatic flourish, Trump warned Canada of severe repercussions should these longstanding tariffs remain intact. He threatened to cripple the Canadian auto industry and indicated that the U.S. might withdraw military protection, casting a shadow of impending doom over Canada’s economic stability.
“If other egregious, longstanding Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S., which will essentially shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada,” Trump warned. “Those cars can easily be made in the USA! Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue.”
In a twist that could only be described as surreal, Trump suggested that Canada should consider becoming the 51st state of the U.S., promising that such a move would eliminate tariffs and significantly lower taxes. “The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State,” he proposed. “This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better, and stronger than ever — And Canada will be a big part of that.”
Trump concluded with an almost poetic vision of unity, suggesting that the historical boundary separating Canada and the U.S. could vanish, fostering a safer and more prosperous nation. “The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World — And your brilliant anthem, ‘O Canada,’ will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen!”
In a follow-up post, Trump ominously warned that if the electricity cuts materialize, Canada would face financial consequences that would echo through history. “Why would our Country allow another Country to supply us with electricity, even for a small area? Who made these decisions, and why? And can you imagine Canada stooping so low as to use ELECTRICITY, that so affects the life of innocent people, as a bargaining chip and threat?” he wrote. “They will pay a financial price for this so big that it will be read about in History Books for many years to come!”
