President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Saturday morning to announce that Washington, D.C., will soon see a significant improvement in safety. In a somewhat peculiarly worded post, he declared that a White House press conference scheduled for Monday would essentially put an end to violent crime in the nation’s capital.
The president emphasized, “It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World. It will soon be the safest!!!” He concluded the message with a thank you and signed off as “President DJT.”
While Trump has cited high crime rates in both Washington, D.C., and New York City as his motivation for this initiative, recent data from the New York City Police Department revealed a historic low in shootings and murders for the first five months of the year.
Similarly, Washington, D.C., has also experienced a decrease in violent crime, with the Metropolitan Police Department confirming a 26% drop compared to the same period last year.
In a stern warning, Trump stated, “If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City.” He emphasized the need to run the city effectively and warned criminals that they will face consequences for their actions.
On Friday, the White House confirmed the reinforcement of federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C.
However, Trump’s approach seems to overlook other potential solutions. Last month, he cut federal funding for gun violence prevention programs across the country, including $158 million in grants designated for cities like D.C. and New York.
As the administration takes steps to address crime in the nation’s capital, it remains to be seen how effective these measures will be in ensuring the safety and security of residents in Washington, D.C.
