Donald Trump’s desire to present himself as a strongman with authoritarian tendencies is perhaps the subject of much contemplation and debate. This ambition is typically indicative of a leader who possesses a certain level of competence; a characteristic that allows them to effectively manipulate or navigate through political systems, often leading to the undermining of democratic institutions. It is worth noting that historical authoritarians have not generally been bunglers, yet here we find Trump.

The bare-knuckled efficacy that might be required to subvert the deeply rooted traditions of American democracy would necessitate a leader with a solid understanding of the mechanisms of governance. Yet, as many have come to realize, Trump exhibits little interest in harnessing the immense power of the federal government towards effective governance.

Instead, he seems more inclined to dismantle governmental frameworks, inviting a chaotic vacuum he can exploit. Initially, it seemed that he could rely on the Heritage Foundation to carry out a coherent policy agenda, only to discover that even ideologues from that institution lack the requisite competence for effective governance.

Interpreting this administration through the lens of incompetence sheds light on its failures, magnifying their significance and pervasiveness.

The glaring incompetence at the highest level is partly why this particular situation arose.

As reported by Rolling Stone:

Officials within the Justice Department were left bewildered when a post on Truth Social directed at “Pam” resembled a casual text from the president himself.

“Yeah, he has a texting style like that,” remarked one adviser. “It mirrors his online persona quite closely.”

Some in the administration concluded that although this appeared to be yet another instance of Trump inadvertently publicizing a private communication, the best course of action would be to pretend it was an intentional message meant for public release.

In a strange twist, the people surrounding Trump seem to be so fearful of voicing criticism that they opt for the cover-up of his blunders rather than addressing the root of his ineptitude.

This paradox is particularly striking considering Trump’s life of privilege: having grown up wealthy, he has always had people around him reluctant to challenge his decisions or say “no.” This bubble of false affirmation is likely why he views himself as error-free and perpetually the most astute individual in any setting.

Trump may aspire to authoritarianism, but his lack of requisite adeptness undermines his capabilities. The troubling consequences of his actions are becoming increasingly evident, yet his grasp on power only grows more desperate and extreme, revealing the stark contrast between his bluster and the underlying disarray of his administration.

What are your thoughts on Trump’s latest blunder? We invite you to share your insights in the comments section below.
