President Donald Trump has enlisted the help of legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus to revamp the courses at Joint Base Andrews, a site long known as the “president’s golf course.” Trump took an aerial tour of the Courses at Andrews aboard Marine One on Saturday and expressed his commitment to improving the facilities there and across the base.
Located in Maryland, about 15 miles from the White House, Andrews is home to Air Force One and has a rich history of presidential golfing. Trump aims to work with Nicklaus to restore the recreational facilities, including three 18-hole golf courses, practice putting greens, private practice areas, and a driving range. The president mentioned that at least two of the courses could undergo renovations.
Nicklaus, a golfing icon with 18 professional majors and 73 PGA Tour wins, leads the Nicklaus Design firm, which has completed over 425 courses worldwide. Trump emphasized the need to enhance the base at Andrews, citing neglect over the years due to lack of maintenance. He praised Nicklaus as the architect for the redesign and expressed confidence in revitalizing the existing courses with minimal investment.
The potential redesign at Andrews follows Trump’s recent construction projects, such as demolishing the East Wing of the White House for a new ballroom and revamping the Rose Garden and other interior spaces. The president’s plans also include a Paris-style arch near the Lincoln Memorial, adding to a series of off-White House site developments.
As questions arise about funding for Nicklaus’s services and improvements at Andrews, the White House and Andrews’ public affairs team have not provided immediate responses. Trump’s vision for enhancing the base’s golf courses aligns with his ongoing efforts to upgrade various properties and landmarks during his presidency.
