Donald Trump has been a significant setback for Republicans in the Texas Senate race.
Trump had the opportunity to back a candidate during the Republican primary.
He even organized an event in Texas
where he invited all three candidates competing in the primary, yet chose not to endorse any of them.

As no candidate secured a majority on primary night, the top two finishers, Sen. John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, moved on to a runoff election scheduled for May.

The Republicans have already spent over $100 million on the Texas primary, with another $100 million potentially required for the runoff. National Republicans are urging Trump to support Cornyn.

Trump attempted to conclude the runoff
by promising to endorse a candidate before the withdrawal deadline, but demanded that the candidate not receiving his endorsement exit the race.

Republicans were elated, believing their troubles were over. Trump seemed set to endorse and close the costly Texas primary.

Senate Republicans anticipated an endorsement for Cornyn, based on rumors, and waited anxiously.

Trump, however, did not make any endorsement, and the reason behind this remains startling.
