The Trump Administration’s recent push to eliminate the 2009 endangerment finding on climate emissions is a dangerous move that puts several rules and their associated benefits at risk. Among these rules are the successful vehicle standards that have been instrumental in reducing pollution, saving money for drivers, driving innovation in the industry, and providing more clean vehicle options in the market.

This decision by the EPA to eliminate the endangerment finding disregards overwhelming evidence of climate change harms and undermines the agency’s responsibility to address greenhouse gas pollution. By shirking this responsibility, the EPA is putting the public’s health and welfare at risk, as climate change continues to intensify with severe weather events and extreme temperatures becoming more frequent.

Transportation, particularly cars, trucks, and buses, is the largest source of human-caused climate pollution in the US, accounting for 28% of the annual total. The US ranks second globally in overall annual climate pollution, making it crucial to reduce emissions from vehicles to combat climate change and control global temperatures.

The EPA’s decision to eliminate greenhouse gas standards for vehicles, including passenger cars and heavy-duty trucks, is a significant setback in the fight against climate change. These standards have been effective in reducing emissions and fuel consumption, leading to cleaner vehicles and lower operating costs for consumers.

Historically, vehicle standards have been instrumental in reducing pollution and improving air quality. Despite industry pushback, these standards have driven innovation and led to a variety of hybrid and electric vehicle models entering the market. The recent move to eliminate these standards threatens to reverse the progress made in reducing emissions and increasing fuel efficiency.

Oil companies stand to benefit from the rollback of vehicle standards, prolonging the use of combustion vehicles and increasing profits at the expense of consumers. The elimination of these rules will result in higher costs for car and truck drivers, further enriching the oil industry while undermining efforts to transition to cleaner vehicles.

The consequences of these rollbacks are significant, with potential cost savings for consumers being wiped out and progress in reducing emissions being reversed. The administration’s disregard for science and public welfare in favor of industry interests is a dangerous precedent that puts the planet and its inhabitants at risk.

In a time when urgent action is needed to address climate change, the decision to eliminate vehicle standards is a step in the wrong direction. It is essential to prioritize public health, environmental protection, and sustainability in all decision-making processes to ensure a safe and healthy future for all.
