The former Prime Minister of the UK is currently on a tour of Australia.
BRISBANE, Australia—Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss has stated that conservative factions and right-leaning organizations must develop a robust “political infrastructure” to effectively challenge the dominant left-wing ideologies that have permeated society’s influential circles for decades.
At the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Australia, she expressed concern over the left-leaning tendencies of the political, business, academic, and media sectors.
“As conservatives, we must recognize that we are no longer the establishment. The power dynamics have shifted left, and we face a choice: either adapt drastically—or confront this new reality head-on,” she articulated to the attendees on October 5.
Truss emphasized that individuals who were once viewed as allies—corporate leaders, public sector figures, and charity executives—are often not aligned with conservative values today.
Despite this, she believes the general populace retains a conservative or traditional outlook, taking pride in the accomplishments of Western civilization.
Understanding Today’s Left
Progressive ideologies have evolved to include diverse perspectives, such as advocacy for climate change initiatives, social justice, and government intervention, alongside a cradle-to-grave welfare model, and the empowerment of global entities like the United Nations.
This evolution is often attributed to the deliberate actions of Marxist and communist theorists aiming to reshape public discourse and policy.
Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci noted in his early 20th-century writings that “any nation rooted in Judeo-Christian values cannot be overthrown until those foundations are undermined … socialism will find success through cultural infiltration, reshaping societal consciousness via education, religious institutions, and media.”
Recent political shifts have seen traditional labor parties in Australia (Labor), the UK (Labour), Canada, and New Zealand adopt more progressive platforms, including support for abortion and transgender rights, leading to fractures within party ideologies.
A notable example is the Australian federal Labor government’s struggle to balance the interests of pro-Palestinian activists with the backlash following the October 7 Hamas attack, while also addressing climate policies that concern blue-collar workers and their job security.
Truss’ Strategic Recommendations
In her address, Truss outlined several crucial strategies conservatives must adopt to enhance their influence and relevance.
“The cultivation of independent media is essential in our fight against the left, as we need direct channels to communicate with the public,” she asserted.
“Additionally, we require a more sophisticated political infrastructure, which is why organizations like CPAC are vital. This initiative aims to create a supportive network, as taking on the left is no small feat. My decade-long experience as a government minister has shown me how entrenched bureaucracy can be.”
She urged conservative leaders across various fields—politics, economics, law—to actively disseminate the conservative perspective.
In recent times, the groundwork for this “infrastructure” has been laid, with the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating these efforts.
Groups like Advance Australia have sought to counteract leftist grassroots organizations such as GetUp!, while the H.R. Nicholls Society in Melbourne has revitalized discussions on workplace law.
Additional initiatives include promoting classical education, homeschooling, and smaller media outlets or grassroots groups like Turning Points Australia and Citizen Go, all aimed at effectively engaging voters.
