TVCO Acquires Worldwide Distribution Rights for Sci-Fi Series “Hidden Island”
Rome-based TVCO has recently secured the worldwide distribution rights, excluding Latin America, for the high-concept sci-fi series titled “Hidden Island” (“Isla oculta”) produced by Chile’s Rio Estudios.
Showrunner Pablo Diáz del Rios expressed his confidence in TVCO’s ability to position the series effectively in diverse markets, while Rio Estudios will handle Latin American sales for the show.
“Hidden Island” is one of the 17 scripted series selected to participate in the Berlinale Series Market Selects, with a screening scheduled for Feb. 16.
The six-part series is set in southern Patagonia and follows Fabiola, a determined detective investigating the disappearance of a Mexican archaeology student who went missing while searching for the mythical Friendship Island. As Fabiola delves deeper into the case, she must determine if it’s a simple kidnapping or something more mysterious. Reports about the island mention strange disappearances, miraculous healings, and potential extraterrestrial activity.
Simonetta Polese, TVCO’s head of sales, praised the series for its thrilling and mysterious blend, led by a strong female protagonist and a captivating narrative. The team believes that “Hidden Island” has all the elements to appeal to broadcasters and platforms worldwide, with the European Film Market serving as the perfect launchpad for its international journey.
The show features top-tier talent from Chile, with Daniela RamĂrez taking the lead role. RamĂrez, known for her International Emmy-nominated performance in HBO Max’s limited series “Isabel: The Intimate Story of Isabel Allende,” brings her expertise to the series.
The writing team includes Julio Rojas, renowned for his successful serial podcast “Case 63,” along with Felipe Carmona (“Prison in the Andes”) and Juan M. Dartizio (“An Unknown Enemy”). Rodrigo Susarte, known for his work on “Gen Mishima” and “Invunche,” directed all six episodes.
In an interview, Pablo Diáz del Rios highlighted the series’ unique approach, avoiding clichĂ©s and focusing on a more philosophical and existential narrative with sci-fi elements. Despite budget constraints, the team aimed to create a compelling storyline that resonates with viewers.
“Hidden Island” delves into themes of artificial intelligence and humanity, reflecting on the current human experience. Fabiola’s journey in the series serves as a premonition, setting the stage for a potential second season set in 2028.
The series is also in contention for the Berlin Series Market’s Studio Babelsberg Production Excellence Award, recognizing outstanding producing qualities that encompass creativity, execution, innovation, and international appeal.
