Tragedy struck on State Highway 1 near Blenheim when a collision between a car and a campervan claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others in critical condition. The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 am this morning, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Despite the valiant efforts of first responders, two individuals succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Hato Hone St John deployed four helicopters, three ambulances, and two managers to provide assistance.
Two critically injured individuals were airlifted to Wellington Hospital, while another was transported to Christchurch Hospital for urgent medical care. The Serious Crash Unit has been notified to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
As authorities work to clear the site, the New Zealand Transport Agency advised motorists to steer clear of the affected area. Travelers heading between Marlborough and Canterbury were urged to take an inland detour, albeit a longer route, to avoid disruptions caused by the road closure.
Drivers should anticipate additional travel time, with the detour potentially adding two to three hours to the journey from Christchurch. State Highway 1 is expected to remain closed for an extended period as investigations and cleanup efforts continue.
