According to a spokesperson for the Kawau Volunteer Coastguard, the skipper promptly raised the alarm and steered the vessel towards the shore. Unfortunately, the trawler sank so rapidly that only the bow remained visible above the water by the time the rescue boat arrived.
The two fishermen onboard, though startled, managed to reach safety on a nearby anchored yacht. The Coastguard team then transferred the men to another trawler that arrived at the scene later on.
The spokesperson emphasized the importance of being prepared for emergencies at sea, highlighting how quickly a disaster can unfold. He also advised caution to boaters in the Kawau Bay area due to the presence of floating debris, such as nets and boat parts, which could pose a risk to vessels.
The distress call was received at 8:49pm, and a volunteer crew was swiftly mobilized within 35 minutes. The spokesperson commended the quick response of the volunteers and expressed gratitude to the other boats that assisted in the rescue efforts.
