The latest data on popular dog names in Christchurch has just been released.

Leading the pack is Charlie, with a whopping 470 registered dogs bearing this name in the city over the past year. Bella and Poppy follow closely behind with 451 and 440 registrations, respectively. Luna rounds out the top four with 411 registrations.

Rounding out the top 10 are Ruby (369), Max (361), Molly (353), Daisy (327), Archie (292), and Frankie (286).

Some of the more unique dog names that have emerged in the past year include Pearl (51), Misty (48), Winter (23), Snowy (24), Summer (29), River (38), Walter (44), Arthur (41), Wilbur (29), Dudley (29), Bertie (33), Fred (40), and Albie (39).

As the Christchurch City Council sends out reminders to dog owners to renew their registrations for the upcoming year, it’s important to note that all dogs must be registered before they reach three months of age.

In the last registration period, Christchurch residents registered around 40,000 dogs, slightly more than the previous year.

“It’s wonderful to see so many residents embracing dog ownership as dogs truly make fantastic companions and pets,” says Animal Services Manager Lionel Bridger. “Through registration fees, the Council’s Animal Management team can provide essential services that ensure the safety and well-being of our community, including dog control, shelter, adoption, free microchipping, designated dog exercise areas, and educational programs on dog safety.”

Mr. Bridger expressed gratitude to the nearly 40% of dog owners who have already registered their pets and urged those who haven’t to do so before the 1st of August to avoid late fees. Payments can be conveniently made online or at any of the Council’s Service Centres.
