The 4 Nations Face-Off in Boston featured a thrilling final matchup between two proud hockey countries, Canada and the United States, with a massive dose of geopolitics adding to the excitement. The game culminated in a historic overtime goal by Connor McDavid, securing a 3-2 victory for Canada.

The viewership numbers for the game were nothing short of remarkable. In the United States, the game drew an astonishing 9.3 million viewers on ESPN, surpassing the viewership of Game 7 of the NHL Finals in 2019. This marked the most-watched NHL game since the league returned to broadcast TV in 1995. In Canada, the game averaged 5.7 million viewers on Sportsnet, peaking at 7.3 million during McDavid’s game-winning goal. With an additional 1.18 million viewers on TVA, the game averaged nearly seven million viewers in Canada alone. When combining the viewership numbers from both countries, the game drew over 16 million viewers in North America.

The earlier round game between the United States and Canada also garnered significant attention, with 4.4 million viewers on ABC. This matchup, which ended in a 3-1 victory for the United States, was the most-watched non-Stanley Cup Final hockey telecast in the U.S. since 2019. The NHL reported a combined North American audience of 10.1 million viewers for the game.

The success of the 4 Nations Face-Off highlighted the strong desire among hockey fans for best-on-best matchups. The next anticipated event on the horizon is the Olympic Games next year in Cortina-Milan, where fans can look forward to witnessing the top hockey nations competing on the world stage.
