Monarch butterflies are facing numerous threats, such as climate change, pesticide use, and the loss of habitats that support native plants like milkweed, which they depend on for survival. The eastern population of monarch butterflies has declined by 80%, while the western population has plummeted by over 95% since the 1980s.

If no action is taken, officials warn that the western population of monarch butterflies could face a more than 99% risk of extinction by 2080. Despite the challenges, there is hope for the species. Recovery efforts are likened to a marathon rather than a sprint, with success achievable through perseverance.

As part of the conservation strategy, a proposal has been made to protect nearly 4,400 acres of critical habitat for monarch butterflies in California along the coast surrounding the San Francisco Bay. This designation aims to provide the butterflies with the necessary space for recovery, following a model that has proven effective for other endangered species.

“We’ve seen how nature can bounce back when given the opportunity to recover,” said Williams, emphasizing the importance of giving the monarch butterflies a chance to thrive. The conservation efforts are crucial in safeguarding the future of these iconic insects and preserving biodiversity. statement: “The project will be completed by the end of the month.”

“The project is expected to be finished before the month is over.” information in your own words.
