Retaliatory Strike Hits Caracas, Venezuela: In a bold move, the United States launched a “large-scale strike” on Venezuela early Saturday, resulting in the capture and extradition of President Nicolás Maduro after months of mounting pressure on his regime. President Donald Trump announced the operation on social media shortly after it took place.

The legal basis for the strike and whether Congress was consulted beforehand remain unclear. The rapid military action, reminiscent of the 1990 U.S. invasion of Panama, led to the apprehension of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who are now facing charges after an indictment in New York, according to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Maduro, who was indicted on “narco-terrorism” conspiracy charges in 2020, had his whereabouts unknown following the attack, prompting Vice President Delcy RodrĂguez to potentially assume power under Venezuelan law. The situation remained tense as explosions rocked Caracas, prompting accusations of an “imperialist attack” from Maduro’s government.

Trump confirmed that Maduro had been captured and flown out of the country, with the operation carried out successfully in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement. The attack, which lasted less than 30 minutes, caused chaos in the Venezuelan capital, with citizens urged to take to the streets in response.

The strike followed months of escalating pressure on Maduro’s regime, including military actions against drug-smuggling boats in the region. The U.S. justified these actions as necessary to combat drug trafficking and declared an “armed conflict” with drug cartels.

International reactions to the strike varied, with Cuba and Iran condemning the operation, while President Javier Milei of Argentina expressed support for Trump’s actions. The aftermath of the strike left Venezuela in a state of uncertainty, with Maduro’s fate and the implications of the attack still unfolding.

The situation remains fluid, with questions surrounding the legality of the strike and the implications for U.S.-Venezuela relations. As the dust settles, the world watches to see how the events of this fateful day will shape the future of Venezuela and its leadership.
