A UK woman recently received £28,989 in compensation after being likened to ‘Star Wars’ villain Darth Vader by a colleague at her workplace. Lorna Rooke, an NHS blood donation worker, filed a complaint against her coworker who had taken a Star Wars-themed online personality test on her behalf and subsequently labeled her as falling into Darth Vader’s category. This comparison led to Ms. Rooke feeling ostracized among her colleagues and ultimately led to her resignation from the job. The employment tribunal in Croydon, south London, determined that the incident caused harm to Ms. Rooke, with the judge stating that being associated with Darth Vader’s personality was insulting. Despite the categorization in the quiz describing the Darth Vader type as a “focused individual who brings the team together,” the judge did not see any positive attributes in this comparison. While Ms. Rooke’s claim that the incident prompted her resignation was rejected, she was awarded compensation for detriment after a protected disclosure. It is worth noting that she lost claims for unfair dismissal, disability discrimination, and failure to make reasonable adjustments. The NHS spokesperson expressed a commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive workplace for all colleagues following the tribunal’s outcome.
