OSU student in a white cap marked '47' stands before a university building as he recounts a recent reprimand by a staff member.

In an eyebrow-raising incident at Oklahoma State University, a student was reprimanded and allegedly threatened for merely sporting a Turning Point USA “47” hat while delivering a speech honoring Charlie Kirk, a conservative figure who was assassinated. This unexpected clash unfolded during a seemingly ordinary meeting between Joshua Wilson, a junior and Senate University Chairman, and a government coordinator, as reported by News9.

What began as a heartfelt homage to Kirk quickly pivoted into a rather disturbing admonishment, enveloped in discussions of “triggered” family members and ominous hints regarding Wilson’s future at the university. Wilson clarifies that his choice of headgear, a plain white baseball cap featuring the number “47” (a nod to Donald Trump as the 47th President), along with the Turning Point USA logo, was never meant to be a political statement.

In an effort to pay tribute to Kirk, who had visited the campus earlier that year as part of his Turning Point USA Campus Tour, Wilson and a friend addressed their peers during a student government meeting. “We were distraught about Kirk’s tragic death, and we thought, ‘If we’re feeling this way, what about our fellow students?'” Wilson shared with News9. Stepping up in their distinctive TPUSA hats, they intended to remind their contemporaries that America thrives on open dialogue rather than suppression.

“We thought, let’s go to student government and show our constituents they shouldn’t be afraid to express their beliefs,” Wilson recounted. His assertive message about the importance of dialogue, rather than a partisan viewpoint, drew applause and support from the audience—no objections were raised at that moment, including from the very staff member who would later reprimand him.

“Personally, this was never about partisanship; it symbolized my desire to honor free speech and the First Amendment,” Wilson stated. Shortly thereafter, he received a summons for a private meeting with the staff member present at his speech, feeling threatened and cornered. During this meeting, which Wilson recorded and shared with News9, the staffer expressed her disapproval regarding his hat, stating, “I have family members who don’t look like you that are triggered by those hats and by that side.” This remark, a reflection of the increasingly divisive atmosphere on campuses, sparked further debate around freedom of expression.

In his response, Wilson reiterated that his hat reflected a commitment to free speech. Yet, the staffer reportedly warned him that his academic year could become quite difficult if he “questioned that belief.”

With the incident quickly gaining traction on social media, Oklahoma State University issued an official statement defending Wilson’s right to express his views. “The OSU Student Government Association is dedicated to a nonpartisan tradition, and no official policies restrict partisan expression. The student in question spoke freely during last month’s SGA meeting and expressed his views without interruption or restriction,” a spokesperson informed Fox News.

Furthermore, the university reinforced its commitment to fostering free expression among all students, asserting, “OSU embraces its role as a marketplace of ideas and stands firm in promoting robust public discourse.” Following the uproar, Andrew Kolvet, Executive Producer of The Charlie Kirk Show, announced on X that the staff member who reprimanded Wilson had been placed on administrative leave, while an internal investigation is underway to evaluate possible further actions.

“The leadership of Oklahoma State University has acted swiftly, placing the faculty member on leave and launching an investigation to ensure the university’s values are upheld among its faculty and student body,” Kolvet wrote.
