UnitedHealth Group, the largest health care company in the U.S., is continuing to expand its reach and influence in the healthcare industry. In 2024 alone, the conglomerate added more than 250 subsidiaries to its already extensive portfolio. While most of these acquisitions were not publicly announced due to their relatively small scale compared to UnitedHealth’s size, the company’s strategic focus on outpatient surgery centers has been evident.

One area where UnitedHealth has made significant investments is in outpatient surgery centers. The company acquired full or partial ownership stakes in over 100 surgery centers in 2024, as revealed in its latest annual financial documents. These outpatient centers specialize in highly profitable services such as heart cath labs, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, and gastroenterology. Notably, UnitedHealth entered into a joint venture with Texas Health Resources, a nonprofit hospital system in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, to operate more than a dozen surgery centers. Texas Health Resources, which generated $6 billion in revenue last year, brings a wealth of expertise and resources to the partnership.

The emphasis on outpatient surgery centers aligns with UnitedHealth’s broader strategy of providing high-quality and cost-effective healthcare services to its members. By investing in these facilities, the company aims to improve access to essential medical procedures while also driving efficiency and reducing overall healthcare costs.

While UnitedHealth’s expansion efforts have been substantial, the company remains committed to delivering value and innovation in the healthcare sector. With its diverse range of subsidiaries and strategic partnerships, UnitedHealth is well-positioned to continue leading the way in shaping the future of healthcare delivery in the United States.

As UnitedHealth Group continues to grow and evolve, its focus on outpatient surgery centers and other key areas of healthcare will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the landscape of the industry for years to come.
