Tragedy struck on Friday morning as a devastating explosion rocked a military facility in Hickman, Tennessee, resulting in the loss of 16 lives.

Authorities confirm that the explosion occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, a company that proudly identifies as a “women-owned small business” according to its website.

Founded in 1980, Accurate Energetic Systems, LLC (AES) emphasizes its leadership in the energetics sector, focusing on the manufacture, handling, and storage of quality energetic products for defense and commercial purposes, as detailed on their site.

The cause of the explosion remains undetermined, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) leading the investigation.

Aerial footage captures the aftermath of the explosion, revealing the extensive damage at Accurate Energetic Systems in Hickman County, Tennessee.

Fox News reported that initial estimates had revealed multiple fatalities, but the precise number was initially unclear; at least 18 individuals were unaccounted for.

By Saturday evening, Sheriff Chris Davis updated the information, confirming 16 individuals were presumed dead, with two others identified as not being present at the site. “I can confirm we have notified all 16 families,” Davis stated.

In a press briefing on Saturday, he noted that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) was on-site employing “rapid DNA” testing to identify the victims. “We’re dealing with explosions, and I would say at this time, we’re dealing with remains,” he added, adding a layer of gravity to the ongoing investigation.

While the possibility of foul play has not been dismissed, Davis acknowledged the complexity of establishing the cause, which could take considerable time to clarify.

UPDATE

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis reported that all 18 individuals previously unaccounted for at the Accurate Energetic Systems (AES) plant near Bucksnort, on the Humphreys-Hickman County line in Tennessee, are now presumed deceased due to the explosion.
