WASHINGTON (AP) — The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and three accompanying warships have arrived in the Middle East, increasing the possibility of President Donald Trump ordering airstrikes on Iran in response to its crackdown on protesters.
The carrier, along with three destroyers, has been deployed to the region to enhance security and stability, according to U.S. Central Command’s announcement on social media.
Although currently in the Indian Ocean and not the Arabian Sea bordering Iran, the USS Abraham Lincoln will bring thousands of additional service members to the Middle East, marking the first U.S. aircraft carrier deployment in the region since the USS Gerald R. Ford was redirected to the Caribbean as part of a pressure campaign on then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in October.
President Trump recently stated that the deployment of the fleet was precautionary, emphasizing the massive fleet heading towards the region. He expressed hope that military action would not be necessary, although he had previously warned of potential airstrikes if Iran escalated its crackdown on protesters, resulting in mass executions and violence. The official Iranian death toll differs significantly from activist reports, indicating a concerning situation in the region.
Despite Trump’s recent claims that Iran had ceased executions of protesters, tensions remain high. The U.S. military has also deployed the Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet to the region, with additional U.S. military cargo planes observed heading towards the area.
Analysts have drawn parallels to previous movements of air defense hardware in anticipation of Iranian retaliation, highlighting the delicate balance of power in the region. The U.S. remains prepared to respond to any provocation, with Trump warning of severe consequences if Iran proceeds with planned executions.
