WASHINGTON (AP) — High-ranking U.S. officials are scheduled to convene with a Chinese delegation in London on Monday for the next phase of trade discussions between the United States and China, announced President Donald Trump on Friday.

This meeting follows a phone call between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, characterized by the U.S. president as a “highly constructive” dialogue aimed at resolving the stalemate over tariffs and the global supply of rare earth minerals.

Representing the U.S. in the trade negotiations will be Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

“I anticipate a successful meeting,” Trump posted on his social media platform on Friday afternoon.

During a press briefing aboard Air Force One, Trump disclosed that Xi had agreed to resume exports of rare earth minerals and magnets to the U.S. that had been reduced by China, posing a threat to various American manufacturers dependent on these crucial materials. There has been no immediate confirmation from China.

The phone call between Trump and Xi, leaders of the world’s largest economies, lasted approximately ninety minutes, as per the U.S. president. The Chinese foreign ministry indicated that Trump initiated the call.

The ministry reported that Xi urged Trump to “withdraw the adverse actions” taken by the U.S. against China. It also mentioned that Trump expressed a desire for Chinese students to continue studying in the U.S., despite his administration’s pledge to revoke certain student visas.
