In recent months, US stocks have been underperforming compared to the rest of the world, marking the widest gap in performance in over three decades. The MSCI USA index, which measures the performance of US equities, has seen an 11 percent decline in the first 16 weeks of the year. In contrast, the MSCI all world ex-US benchmark has climbed 4 percent in dollar terms during the same period, highlighting a significant disparity in performance.

This discrepancy can be attributed to the uncertainty surrounding President Donald Trump’s trade policies, which have sparked concerns among investors and led to a mass exodus from American assets. Investors fear that Trump’s aggressive tariff measures will have a more substantial negative impact on the US economy, causing a slowdown in growth and an increase in inflation.

The weakening US dollar has also played a role in widening the performance gap between US and non-US markets. The greenback has depreciated by 8 percent against a basket of major currencies this year, boosting the performance of non-US assets in dollar terms.

At the beginning of the year, investors were optimistic about the prospects of US stocks, driven by Trump’s tax cuts and their positive impact on corporate profits. However, the optimism quickly faded as Trump escalated trade tensions with other countries, leading to a full-blown trade war that caught many investors off guard.

While US stocks have struggled to recover from the initial shock of the trade war, other regions have seen significant gains. In Europe, defense stocks have performed particularly well, fueled by increased government spending on defense initiatives to reduce reliance on the US. European indices such as Germany’s Dax and France’s Cac 40 have posted impressive gains in dollar terms.

In Asia, the Hang Seng index has also seen a positive trend, driven by the rise of Chinese tech stocks and advancements in artificial intelligence technology. Chinese companies like DeepSeek have developed AI models at a fraction of the cost and computing power of their US counterparts, attracting investor interest and driving market performance.

Overall, the global financial landscape is evolving rapidly, with regional dynamics and geopolitical factors shaping market trends. By staying informed and adapting to changing market conditions, investors can navigate these uncertainties and capitalize on emerging opportunities in the world of finance.
