The intense battle for the presidency between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris raced towards an uncertain conclusion on Tuesday, with millions of Americans casting their votes at polling stations to decide between two starkly different visions for the nation.
The race, marked by unprecedented events such as two assassination attempts on Trump, President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal, and Harris’ swift ascent, remained fiercely contested, even after extensive campaigning and billions of dollars spent.
Trump, known for his claims of winning the 2020 election against Biden and the violent attack on the US Capitol by his supporters in 2021, cast his vote near his residence in Palm Beach, Florida.
“If I lose an election, if it’s a fair election, I’m gonna be the first one to acknowledge it,” Trump told reporters, without further elaboration.
Over 80 million Americans had already voted before Tuesday, either through mail-in ballots or in-person voting, with short and orderly lines observed at several polling stations on Election Day.
Some technical glitches in vote-counting were reported in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, leading to an extension of voting hours by two hours as granted by a local court. Additionally, false bomb threats briefly evacuated two polling locations in Fulton County, Georgia.
In Dearborn, Michigan, Nakita Hogue, 50, accompanied by her 18-year-old daughter, Niemah Hogue, a college student, voted for Harris. Niemah shared her reliance on birth control for menstrual regulation, while her mother recounted a past miscarriage that required surgery, both expressing concerns over potential restrictions on women’s healthcare by Republican lawmakers.
“For my daughter, who is venturing out into the world and forging her own path, I want her to have that choice,” Nakita Hogue stated. “She should be able to make her own decisions.”
At a library in Phoenix, Arizona, Felicia Navajo, 34, and her husband Jesse Miranda, 52, arrived with one of their three young children to vote for Trump.
As a union plumber who immigrated to the US from Mexico at a young age, Miranda believed Trump would be more effective in combatting inflation and managing immigration.
“I want to see good people come to this town, people that are willing to work, people who are willing to just live the American dream,” Miranda expressed.
Trump’s campaign has hinted at a potential declaration of victory on election night, even with numerous ballots yet to be counted, mirroring his actions from four years ago. He has consistently alleged that any defeat would only result from widespread fraud, echoing his baseless claims from 2020. The final winner might not be determined for days if the margins in key battleground states are as narrow as anticipated.
Irrespective of the outcome, history is poised to be made.
Harris, aged 60, the first female vice president, stands to become the first woman, black woman, and South Asian American to secure the presidency.
Trump, aged 78, the sole president to face impeachment twice and the first former president to face criminal conviction, could also become the first president to win non-consecutive terms in over a century.
Opinion polls indicate a close race in the seven crucial states that are likely to determine the victor: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Reuters/Ipsos polling reveals Harris leading among women by 12 percentage points, while Trump maintains an edge among men by seven percentage points.
The election underscores a deeply divided nation, with rifts that have only deepened throughout the fiercely competitive campaign. Trump has employed increasingly grim and apocalyptic rhetoric on the campaign trail, while Harris has called for unity, cautioning that a second Trump term could endanger the foundations of American democracy.
The control of both chambers of Congress hangs in the balance. Republicans have a smoother path in the US Senate, where Democrats are defending multiple seats in Republican-leaning states, while the House of Representatives is predicted to be a toss-up.
Dark Rhetoric
Throughout the campaign, Trump criticized Biden and Harris for their economic policies, a top concern for voters despite low unemployment and stabilizing inflation rates. However, he struggled to stay on message, at one point questioning Harris’ Black heritage and pledging to protect women “whether they like it or not.”
More than ever before, Trump demonized illegal immigrants, falsely accusing them of fueling a surge in violent crime, and vowed to use the government to go after his political adversaries.
His rhetoric has resonated with some black and Latino voters, as he often warns about immigrants taking away job opportunities from these communities.
In contrast, Harris has aimed to build a broader coalition of liberal Democrats, independents, and moderate Republicans dissatisfied with Trump, portraying him as too risky to re-elect.
She campaigned on safeguarding reproductive rights, a cause that has mobilized women since the US Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling that eliminated a nationwide right to abortion.
Harris has faced criticism from many pro-Palestinian voters over the Biden administration’s support for Israel in the Gaza conflict. While she has not indicated an imminent shift in US policy, she has pledged to work towards resolving the conflict.
Following Biden’s withdrawal due to concerns about his age and mental acuity, Harris sought to highlight Trump’s perceived shortcomings, pointing to his disjointed speeches as evidence of his unfitness for office, and has endeavored to attract young voters, a pivotal demographic.
Trump countered the endorsements of Harris supporters like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé with the backing of Elon Musk, the wealthiest individual globally, who played an increasingly prominent role as a surrogate and major donor to Trump’s campaign.
Tuesday’s election comes after a tumultuous period in modern American politics.
In May, a New York jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records to conceal payments to a porn star. Shortly after, Trump and Biden engaged in their sole debate, where the incumbent president’s lackluster performance exacerbated existing concerns about his mental acuity.
In July, Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. Just a week later, Biden exited the race.
