Polling Insights: Talarico Takes the Lead in Texas Senate Democratic Primary

James Talarico has surged ahead in the Texas Senate Democratic primary, boasting a 9-point advantage over Rep. Jasmine Crockett, as revealed by recent Emerson College polling released on Thursday.

With the numbers indicating Talarico, a state representative from Austin, leading the Dallas Congresswoman 47 percent to 38 percent, the March 3 primary is shaping up to be a crucial turning point.

Upon entering the race in December, Crockett was considered a formidable contender due to her national profile and impressive fundraising abilities. However, Talarico’s strategic investment in his campaign and his ability to amass a significant online following have propelled him ahead in this contest.

Republican Race: A Tight Squeeze

On the Republican front, the poll indicates a nail-biter: Attorney General Ken Paxton holds a mere 1-point lead over Senator John Cornyn, with support at 27 to 26 percent, while Rep. Wesley Hunt trails behind at 16 percent. The likelihood of a runoff on May 26 looms, as none of the candidates are nearing the crucial 50 percent mark, extending what is expected to be a grueling primary season.

Democrats’ Frustrations and Hopes

The Democratic Party has long harbored dreams of achieving statewide victory in Texas, only to be thwarted time and again. They are optimistic that an anticipated electoral wave, driven by opposition to Trump, could finally turn the tide in their favor. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed to POLITICO his belief that Texas represents a “very possible” opportunity for a pickup, although he refrained from listing it among the party’s top four targets.

Support Demographics: A Racial Divide

The polling data reveals a pronounced racial division in support for Talarico and Crockett. Talarico attracts a majority of Hispanic and white voters, while Crockett enjoys overwhelming backing from Black voters. Among men, Talarico leads with 52 percent support compared to Crockett’s 30 percent, whereas women appear more evenly split, with Talarico at 44 percent and Crockett at 43 percent.

Republican Discontent and Strategy

Many Republican voters remain incensed at Cornyn for his backing of a bipartisan gun control bill during the Biden administration, threatening to oust him as retribution. Paxton, Texas’ Attorney General for the past decade, commands strong loyalty from the MAGA base, despite being embroiled in multiple state and federal investigations.

Democrats are strategizing with the hope that Paxton emerges victorious in the GOP primary, believing his political baggage could alienate voters in the general election. The poll suggests that both Talarico and Crockett would hypothetically tie with Paxton at 46 percent. In contrast, Cornyn appears to have a more favorable standing, edging out Talarico 47 to 44 percent and Crockett 48 to 43 percent.

Top Voter Concerns: Economy, Immigration, and Democracy

As the campaign heats up, the economy remains the paramount concern for Texas voters, followed closely by immigration issues and perceived threats to democracy. Understanding these priorities will be crucial for candidates as they navigate the treacherous waters of the upcoming election.
