Starz Acquires “Amadeus” Series Featuring Mozart and Salieri Rivalry
Starz has secured the rights to the five-part series “Amadeus,” which delves into the intense rivalry between composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. The show, starring Will Sharpe as Mozart, Paul Bettany as Salieri, and Gabrielle Creevy as Constanze Mozart, first premiered on Sky in the U.K. on Dec. 21.
Based on Peter Shaffer’s renowned play and adapted by Joe Barton, creator of “Black Doves,” “Amadeus” has garnered attention for its captivating storytelling and stellar performances. The series is set to make its debut on Starz in the U.S. later this year after a successful acquisition deal facilitated by NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution.
Starz Networks President, Alison Hoffman, expressed excitement about adding “Amadeus” to their original series lineup, citing the show’s bold reimagining of historical rivalries and its character-driven narrative. The series promises to capture the passion, envy, and genius that defined Mozart’s world, drawing audiences in with its premium period drama offerings.
The official synopsis of “Amadeus” sets the stage for a gripping narrative, following the collision of Amadeus with key figures in 18th Century Vienna, including his wife Constanze and the jealous Salieri. As Mozart’s brilliance shines despite personal struggles, Salieri becomes consumed by his desire to bring him down, leading to a 30-year rivalry that culminates in a shocking confession.
In addition to the main cast members, the series features a talented ensemble including Rory Kinnear, Lucy Cohu, Jonathan Aris, and more, portraying pivotal characters in Mozart and Salieri’s tumultuous relationship.
