In late November of last year, former U.S. men’s national team midfielder Jermaine Jones joined Central Valley Fuego FC as its head coach, marking a new chapter for both him and the club. Jones had long expressed his desire to transition into coaching, while Fuego was in need of a high-profile figure to boost its fan base and competitive edge in the USL League One.

However, as the months passed, tensions between Jones and the players began to surface, leading to undisclosed disciplinary action against the coach. An independent investigation commissioned by the United Soccer League Players Association (USLPA) revealed instances of harassment, retaliation, and hostility towards members of the team. Jones was subsequently suspended through the end of the 2024 season based on the findings of the investigation.

The investigation also uncovered a separate labor complaint filed by the USLPA against the club, alleging interference with union activities and threats of retaliation against players. The National Labor Relations Board is currently investigating the complaint.

Despite his suspension, neither the club nor the league publicly announced Jones’ disciplinary action. The USL confirmed the suspension on September 27 and stated that the investigation findings were final. Jones and the club have since expressed their intent to challenge the suspension, citing procedural shortcomings in the investigation process.

The club’s struggles on and off the field have been compounded by the toxic environment described by players and employees. The league’s investigation, conducted by Foley & Lardner, LLP, found multiple violations of player safeguarding policies by Jones, including harassment, emotional misconduct, and a hostile environment.

Players spoke anonymously to The Athletic, detailing their experiences under Jones’ leadership. They described a culture of fear and mental anguish, with Jones using his status as a former player to exert control over the team. Players were allegedly discouraged from interacting with the USLPA and were subjected to threats and intimidation by Jones.

Throughout the season, players felt pressured to conform to Jones’ demands, leading to a sense of unease and dissatisfaction within the team. The situation reached a breaking point in September, resulting in Jones’ suspension and the subsequent investigation.

As Jones awaits a decision on his coaching future, players are left uncertain about their own. Some have expressed a desire to leave the club due to the challenging environment created by Jones. The upcoming offseason will likely see significant roster changes as players evaluate their options moving forward.

In the midst of this turmoil, the future of Central Valley Fuego FC hangs in the balance. The club’s struggles on and off the field have highlighted the importance of fostering a positive and supportive environment for players and staff. As the league grapples with the aftermath of the investigation, the focus remains on promoting accountability and ensuring the well-being of all individuals involved in the sport.
