Vanguard, a leading fund giant, has recently introduced a new actively managed fixed-income exchange-traded fund to its lineup of low-cost funds. The Vanguard Multi-Sector Income Bond ETF (VGMS) aims to provide investors with total return potential while generating higher income by offering exposure to various fixed-income sectors, including investment-grade credit, high-yield corporates, emerging markets bonds, and structured products. This new fund comes with an expense ratio of 0.3%, making it an attractive option for investors looking to diversify their fixed-income portfolio.

Rebecca Venter, senior fixed-income product manager at Vanguard, highlighted the benefits of multi-sector exposure for investors. One key reason investors opt for this type of exposure is to complement a higher-quality core allocation with a credit enhancement. By investing in VGMS, investors can enhance their yield and gain credit exposure, allowing Vanguard to strategically allocate across credit markets to maximize returns.

Another crucial reason investors turn to multi-sector investments, particularly those in the later stages of their investment horizons, is to generate a significant level of income. VGMS actively and dynamically invests across credit markets, leveraging Vanguard’s team of active experts to identify the best income opportunities. This hands-on approach helps separate the winners from the losers, especially when taking on higher levels of credit risk.

VGMS is Vanguard’s seventh actively managed fixed-income ETF in the U.S., complementing the existing Vanguard Multi-Sector Income Bond Fund Admiral Shares (VMSAX) mutual fund. Venter emphasized the importance of multi-sector income as a key area for active management, noting that the ETF structure is increasingly preferred by investors. With the team, capabilities, and product design already in place for the mutual fund, launching VGMS is a strategic move to expand Vanguard’s active ETF lineup and cater to investor preferences.

Overall, VGMS offers investors a unique opportunity to access a diversified portfolio of fixed-income securities with the potential for higher returns and income generation. With Vanguard’s expertise and active management approach, investors can benefit from a well-rounded investment strategy in the fixed-income space.
