Leavitt’s Sharp Rebuttal to Claims of Political Distraction
On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt skillfully dismantled a left-leaning reporter’s insinuation that President Biden dispatched National Guard and Marine troops to California merely to divert attention from his recent spat with Elon Musk.
Last week, the President faced a vociferous backlash from Musk, who launched a tirade against Biden after the latter’s critique of Musk’s opposition to a significant piece of legislation, dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill, currently in the legislative pipeline. Musk’s vitriol escalated as he accused Trump of needing his backing to secure the 2024 election, demanded Trump’s impeachment, and even linked him to the Epstein scandal.
In parallel, violent riots erupted in Los Angeles in response to ICE enforcement actions, prompting the President to activate the National Guard over the weekend, followed by the deployment of 700 Marines on Monday to quell the unrest instigated by left-wing activists and, according to some narratives, foreign elements.
Leavitt noted that hundreds of individuals arrested during the riots were undocumented immigrants, some of whom reportedly hurled Molotov cocktails at law enforcement. This situation, she argued, constituted a foreign incursion necessitating a robust response from U.S. forces.

Importantly, the two incidents were not interconnected. By the time federal troops were mobilized in California, the tensions between Musk and Trump had already begun to cool. This deployment was a direct response to the perceived failure of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom to manage the unrest stemming from illegal immigration issues.
“There are criticisms suggesting that the President’s actions were a calculated attempt to divert focus from his dispute with Musk,” the reporter asserted, before Leavitt interjected with a compelling rebuttal.
“That’s an incredibly disingenuous accusation,” Leavitt countered. “The President witnessed the chaos: border patrol and ICE agents assaulted with rocks and incendiary devices, vehicles ablaze, and illegal immigrants waving foreign flags. This was the catalyst for his decisive action.”
Leavitt emphasized that California has long suffered from leadership failures, particularly under Newsom, and the President’s response was solely aimed at addressing the ongoing crisis rather than any personal feud with Musk.
Reporter: Regarding the President’s response to the LA protests, there is criticism that suggests his actions were a strategic diversion from his feud with Musk. How do you address that?
Leavitt: The President condemned the violence during the LA riots. That’s an incredibly disingenuous attack. He saw the distressing images of border patrol and ICE agents facing violence. His response was necessary and effective, as evidenced by the reduced unrest in Los Angeles following his intervention. I would also note that the governor and mayor must take further action. Newsom’s recent national address seemed more focused on his political future than on real solutions. California has suffered from his ineptitude for years, and the President’s response was a direct reaction to that ongoing failure.
