An experienced hiker had a brush with death on Sunday while hiking through Arches National Park in Utah. He found himself trapped in quicksand, a perilous situation that is often portrayed in old television shows and adventure movies.

Grand County Search and Rescue incident commander John Marshall recounted his initial disbelief upon hearing about the hiker stuck in quicksand during an interview with NBC News.

A drone captured the aerial footage of the dramatic rescue operation, showing Marshall and his team assisting the hiker, who fortunately escaped without injury after spending several chilling hours struggling to free himself from the quicksand that had engulfed him up to his thighs.

The New York Times later identified the hiker as Austin Dirks, a man in his 30s from Colorado, who was on the second day of a 20-mile solo hike on the Hayduke Trail when the incident occurred. He described his leg being firmly stuck, akin to being encased in concrete, and had to resort to using a Garmin satellite messenger to signal for help due to the lack of cell service.

Marshall explained that the emergency beacon activated by Dirks sent his GPS coordinates to the search-and-rescue team, prompting them to embark on the rescue mission equipped with essential tools such as a ladder, vehicle traction boards, and a drone.

The team encountered frigid weather conditions, with temperatures as low as 21 degrees, making the rescue operation even more challenging. Despite the adverse conditions, they managed to communicate with Dirks and locate him with the help of a park ranger.

After several attempts, the team successfully freed Dirks from the quicksand, ensuring his safety and well-being. They provided him with warmth and support until he could regain his strength and walk independently.

Dirks, exhausted but grateful for his rescue, shared his terrifying ordeal in a detailed post on Reddit, recounting the harrowing experience he faced while traversing the Hayduke Trail.

Marshall emphasized the importance of remaining calm in such situations, as struggling in quicksand can exacerbate the sinking process. He highlighted that quicksand victims usually do not sink beyond their waist due to the buoyant nature of the human body.
