Fans of Vision have been pondering the question, “What is grief if not love enduring?” since the demise of Paul Bettany‘s android in “Avengers: Infinity War.” However, he made his return in the 2021 Disney+ series “WandaVision.” Fans won’t have to wait much longer, as Vision is set to reappear in the upcoming Disney+ series “Vision Quest” scheduled for 2026.
The first trailer for “Vision Quest” was unveiled to fans at New York Comic Con, showcasing Bettany reprising his role as White Vision, alongside a human version of the character. The trailer also featured human incarnations of Ultron, originally voiced by James Spader in the second “Avengers” film, as well as AI personas including Jarvis, Friday, and Edith. A tantalizing moment at the end revealed an adult Tommy, who had been seen as a child in “WandaVision.”
“Vision Quest” is framed as the concluding piece of a trilogy that includes “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along.” In the trailer, we see Bettany approaching a grand white mansion where he is greeted by human-like servants that turn out to be recreated AI programs. Among them are Jarvis, who started as Tony Stark’s AI and transitioned into Vision; Friday, the AI assistant succeeding Jarvis; and Edith, the AI from Stark’s sunglasses introduced in “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”
Spader returns as the notorious AI Ultron, whom Vision apparently vanquished in the earlier film (an event that took place off-screen). Additionally, the trailer depicts Spader as a human, enhancing the complexity of his character. “Vision Quest” also features a cast that includes Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Ruaridh Mollica, and Emily Hampshire. Terry Matalas, known for “Star Trek: Picard,” is the creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the series.
Vision’s last significant appearance for many Marvel fans was his death at the hands of Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War,” where the villain extracted the Mind Stone from Vision, leading to his immediate death before Thanos used the gauntlet to erase half of all life. Subsequently, Vision was mysteriously brought back to life, living a serene, family-oriented existence with Wanda Maximoff, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, in “WandaVision.” As the series progressed, it became evident that Wanda was dealing with profound emotional distress, with the idyllic life she created alongside Vision being a magical construct stemming from her grief. Eventually, it is revealed that Wanda took Vision’s corpse from the governmental agency S.W.O.R.D. and revived him through her formidable magic. This version of Vision lacked any memories of his past and engaged in a confrontation with a government-controlled White Vision, which eventually regained its memories and flew away.
Wanda made another appearance in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” where she experiences a transformation into the primary antagonist of the film. In 2024, Joe Locke played the role of Billy, Wanda and Vision’s son, in the “WandaVision” spinoff titled “Agatha All Along,” featuring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness. This series wrapped up with Agatha and Billy setting off to locate Billy’s brother, Tommy. It seems that “Vision Quest” will advance Tommy’s age, as was done with Billy in “Agatha.”
