Vladimir Putin rejects Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s call for peace summit

The conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate as Russian President Vladimir Putin rejects calls for an immediate ceasefire and a top-level summit to end the ongoing war. This rejection raises concerns that the conflict will persist without a resolution in sight.

During a televised cabinet meeting, Putin accused Ukraine of organizing terrorist attacks following a series of daring strikes behind enemy lines. He dismissed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s terms for peace, stating, “How can we have meetings like this under these conditions? What is there to talk about? Who has negotiations with terrorists?”

Putin’s aggressive stance, coupled with an increase in attacks and waning interest from US President Donald Trump in brokering peace, indicates that Russia remains committed to fighting unless Ukraine surrenders to its demands.

Zelenskyy, on the other hand, rejected Russia’s peace terms, labeling them as an “ultimatum” that would equate to Ukraine’s surrender. This back-and-forth between the two leaders has left peace talks brokered by Turkey and the US in disarray, with little progress made towards a resolution.

Both Moscow and Kyiv have presented their terms for a peace agreement, highlighting the vast differences between the two sides. Russia’s demands include the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from key cities and territories, a ban on Ukraine joining military alliances, and the lifting of all sanctions against Russia. Zelenskyy condemned these demands as an ultimatum and deemed further diplomatic meetings in Istanbul as futile.

Putin blamed Ukraine for a series of railway bombings aimed at derailing the negotiation process and targeting civilians. He accused Ukraine of resorting to terrorist attacks due to Russia’s military superiority on the battlefield. Despite Ukraine’s recent successful strikes on Russian airfields and infrastructure, Putin remains steadfast in his refusal to declare a ceasefire or engage in a summit with Zelenskyy.

As tensions continue to rise, both Ukraine and Russia plan to conduct a large-scale prisoner exchange, involving up to 1,200 individuals from each side. Additionally, a parallel exchange of soldiers’ remains is underway, though Russia denies having as many casualties as Ukraine.

The situation in Ukraine remains volatile, with no immediate resolution in sight. The ongoing conflict underscores the deep-rooted animosity between the two nations and the challenges of achieving lasting peace in the region.
