In 1977, a young veterinarian named Dougall McLachlan arrived in Waimate in his vibrant orange Morris Marina car, ready to start his career.

Now at the age of 70, Mr. McLachlan is preparing to retire after an impressive 48-year tenure in the same town. He fondly reminisces about his first day on the job, which involved the unique task of castrating calves.

Throughout his career, Mr. McLachlan has not only been known for his veterinary expertise but also for his contributions to the community. As the pipe major of the Waimate Highland Pipe Band, his piping skills have taken him around the world, including a memorable performance at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2003.

Aside from his musical talents, Mr. McLachlan has also showcased his singing abilities in various productions with the Waimate Theatre Company. His passion for the arts has even influenced the culture at Veterinary Centre Waimate, where creativity and talent among the staff are celebrated.

Reflecting on his career, Mr. McLachlan describes it as a “great journey” filled with camaraderie, challenges, and fulfilling moments. Despite the evolving landscape of veterinary care and the increasing pressures in the profession, he emphasizes the importance of support and teamwork in overcoming obstacles.

As he looks forward to retirement and more time for golfing, Mr. McLachlan expresses gratitude to his supportive wife, Kristine, and looks back on his fulfilling career with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

To celebrate his retirement, a send-off event will be held at the Waimate clinic, where colleagues and friends will bid farewell to the beloved “McVet.”
