Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is set to address the media this afternoon, marking the sixth day of a government shutdown initiated by Democrats.
The stalemate began at midnight Tuesday after Senate Democrats leveraged their demands for $1.5 trillionâprimarily aimed at funding free healthcare for undocumented immigrants and providing gender transition services for minorsârefusing to support a temporary funding measure.
Interestingly, a recent New York Times poll revealed that a significant number of votersâincluding nearly half of those identifying as Democratsâoppose utilizing a government shutdown to achieve such goals, raising questions about the political strategy of the Democrats in this impasse.
As various attempts to secure government funding have failed, Democrats have seemingly chosen illegal alien benefits as the non-negotiable cornerstone of their agenda.
Simultaneously, disturbances are escalating in cities like Portland, Oregon, and Chicago, Illinois, where the Trump Administration is facing resistance in its efforts to enforce ICE operations. Local leaders and radical activists have put up a significant fight against these enforcement actions.
Portland is currently grappling with violence attributed to Antifa, which has wreaked havoc throughout the city, intimidating law-abiding citizens and clashing with law enforcement.
As reported previously, Press Secretary Leavitt indicated that President Trump is considering retracting federal funding for Portland due to the ongoing violence and the refusal of local officials to engage with federal authorities.
In an attempt to restore order, President Trump has proposed deploying National Guard troops. However, his efforts have faced legal barriers, notably from a Trump-appointed judge, complicating matters further.
âSince June,â Leavitt remarked, âradical activists have violently breached ICE facilities, employing stop signs as battering rams and launching various projectiles at officers, all while harassing local residents and even displaying a guillotine outside the facility.â
Moreover, in Chicago, federal officers from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have reportedly been ambushed by a convoy of vehicles, an incident denoted as a coordinated attack by domestic extremists in protest against deportation efforts.
In response, President Trump is also looking to send additional National Guard resources to Chicago to quell the unrest.
The press briefing is expected to commence at 1 pm ET.
