In an unusual move, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is set to conduct her second press briefing of the week amidst a government shutdown that has now reached day three, a situation which seems to be fueled by the Democrats’ hold on government operations.

The shutdown commenced abruptly when the clock struck midnight, as Senate Democrats leveraged their demands for $1.5 trillion in funding aimed at providing free healthcare for undocumented immigrants and gender transition care for minors. They notably declined to vote on a stopgap measure the previous Tuesday night, a decision that has initiated this deadlock.

Interestingly, a recent New York Times poll indicates that a significant majority of voters—including nearly half of Democrats—oppose the idea of using a government shutdown as leverage for advancing what some might call a radical agenda. The polling data suggests that political gambles can backfire, particularly when they contradict public sentiment.
In an unusual twist, since the shutdown was initiated, the White House has introduced a countdown clock on its official website, tracking the duration of this stalemate down to the second. The page also highlights letters of support for a straightforward continuing resolution from various state legislatures and local officials, perhaps an attempt to foster a sense of urgency and solidarity among constituents.
During a press conference on Wednesday—shortly after the government shutdown was enacted—Vice President JD Vance joined Leavitt in the briefing room. This sparked speculation about potential surprise guests making an appearance today, adding a sense of unpredictability to the proceedings.
As reported by The Gateway Pundit, Vance did not hold back in critiquing Chuck Schumer and the Democrats, accusing them of substantial inconsistencies in their stance on government shutdowns and their approach towards illegal immigration, particularly concerning taxpayer-funded benefits for undocumented individuals. He noted, “If you go back to what Bill Clinton was saying, even Barack Obama, in some cases, about illegal immigration 10, 15, 20 years ago, you’d likely place them on the MAGA-Right, simply based on their rhetoric.”
However, Vance emphasized that currently, “Chuck Schumer seems listen to the extreme left elements within his party,” asserting that his fear of a primary challenge from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is steering his decisions away from moderate ground.
The press briefing is anticipated to kick off at 1 pm ET.
