In a recent Senate hearing, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi showcased her ability to counter political theatrics when confronted by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR), who attempted to implicate former President Donald Trump in corruption allegations related to foreign influence.
During the session, which focused on the Department of Justice’s budget for 2026, Senator Merkley seized the opportunity to question Bondi about a $2 billion investment made by a United Arab Emirates (UAE) firm in one of Trump’s cryptocurrencies, suggesting this could indicate a compromise of the former president’s integrity. Merkley’s inquiry linked this investment to a subsequent easing of restrictions on the UAE’s acquisition of advanced U.S. semiconductors, a move that reversed a Biden-era policy aimed at limiting technology exports to the region due to national security concerns.
While the timing of these events raised eyebrows, it is essential to note that no concrete evidence of a quid pro quo has emerged, and many observers consider the correlation coincidental at best. Merkley, however, was quick to voice his concerns about potential foreign influence on American governance.
“This sequence of events, where a foreign government asks for a big favor and we had previously banned these chips to the UAE because of the national security concerns,” Merkley began. “Then they buy $2 billion of the president’s coins, and then the president says, ‘We will buy these chips.’”
Merkley’s accusations, however, were met with a robust rebuttal from Bondi, who appeared well-prepared for the line of questioning. Rather than engage in a back-and-forth about Trump, Bondi pivoted to highlight pressing issues affecting Oregon, which Merkley represents. She cited the recent arrest of a Mexican national in Oregon with 384 pounds of methamphetamine and pointed to a Honduran drug trafficker involved in fentanyl distribution as more immediate concerns for the state.
“The foreign influence on America I would be concerned with if I were you is the Mexican national that resided in Oregon who we just arrested who had 384 lbs of methamphetamine,” she asserted. “The foreign individual whom I would be concerned about if I were a senator from Oregon is the Honduran drug trafficker who was residing in Portland for distributing fentanyl.”
This tactical shift not only caught Merkley off guard but also underscored a critical failure to address local issues while engaging in national-level political posturing.
As the exchange escalated, Bondi did not hold back. “Senator, it is WIDELY offensive that you would accuse President Trump of not protecting American interests in our country when he is the president who has shut down our border,” she declared. “You are trying to play a gotcha question at a budget hearing when you have murders left and right in your sick state, and we are doing everything we can to help your liberal state and keep those citizens safe, all to play a gotcha question on Trump.”

In summary, what began as a politically charged inquiry into Trump’s dealings quickly unraveled into a stark reminder of the pressing issues facing Oregon, highlighting the gap between political discourse and the realities on the ground. As Bondi pointedly illustrated, perhaps the most significant foreign influence to worry about is not from a distant nation, but from the very real threats posed by drug trafficking and crime.
WOWZERS. MUST SEE. This is what you call getting “OWNED” . Bondi unloads fire on Sen. Merkley saying “ You are trying to play a GOTCHA question at a BUDGET hearing when you have MURDERS left & right in YOUR SICK STATE & we are doing everything we can to help your LIBERAL STATE… pic.twitter.com/ykXeM4EGF9
