In a recent exchange that resembled something out of a political drama, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) rebuffed Rep. Hakeem Jeffries’ (D-NY) invitation for a televised debate concerning the ongoing government shutdown, deeming it an act of desperation.

On Monday, Jeffries extended a formal challenge to Johnson, suggesting a debate on the House floor “any day this week,” and insisted that it be broadcast live “to the American people.”

Johnson wasted no time in rejecting this overture, labeling it a mere “publicity stunt.”

Subsequent to his comments about the shutdown, Johnson addressed the media.

Following a reporter’s question about Jeffries’ debate challenge, Johnson remarked, “When polls indicate that only about 13% of the people approve of your messaging, it’s not surprising to see desperate pleas for attention—much like what we’re seeing from Hakeem Jeffries.”

He continued, recalling the previous debates in the House: “We thoroughly discussed these issues. Jeffries had seven or eight minutes to speak with his colleagues backing him up, and yet, we still passed our bill through bipartisan support and moved it to the Senate.”

Jeffries seems to be facing an uphill battle defending the Democrats’ stance on the shutdown, even from traditionally friendly media personnel. During an appearance on the Today Show, Craig Melvin pointedly addressed Jeffries’ situation, stating, “That’s exactly what you’re doing right now. Hundreds of thousands of workers are being held hostage.”

During another interview, NBC’s Kristen Welker reminded Jeffries that the Democrats were, in fact, responsible for the shutdown, noting, “It’s Democratic Senators who are withholding their votes on what is being called a clean resolution… which is something quite frankly… that you and other Democrats have advocated for in the past.”

On Monday morning, Johnson stated, “Democrats have opted for a government shutdown rather than supporting the American populace. Instead of aligning with Republicans to pass a clean, responsible continuing resolution, they are catering to their far-left base—demanding $1.5 trillion in new partisan spending and nearly $200 billion in taxpayer benefits for illegal immigrants. This reflects a costly, self-imposed shutdown that is out of step with public sentiment, with even some Democrats conceding it will adversely affect working families nationwide.”

“According to a recent New York Times/Siena Poll, 65% of Americans believe Democrats should NOT have initiated a government shutdown over these partisan demands. Alarmingly, less than half of Democrats back their party’s approach, and independents oppose it nearly two to one.”
