Waymo has revealed that its self-driving vehicle was involved in a fatal accident in San Francisco after a cat unexpectedly darted under the car as it was moving away.
A spokesperson for the company stated, “The trust and the safety of the communities we serve is our highest priority. We reviewed this, and while our vehicle was stopped to pick up passengers, a nearby cat darted under our vehicle as it was pulling away.”
The spokesperson further added, “We send our deepest sympathies to the cat’s owner and the community who knew and loved him, and we will be making a donation to a local animal rights organization in his honor.”
The tragic incident occurred in San Francisco’s Mission District, where the cat, affectionately known as the “Mayor of 16th Street,” had been a beloved figure in the community for years.
