Hungary Faces Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak: A Familiar Foe
Once again, Hungary finds itself confronting the resurgence of foot-and-mouth disease, a problem it hasn’t grappled with in over five decades. The disease was detected in March on a cattle farm situated near the borders with Austria and Slovakia.
One might casually remark, “These things happen,” while others might ponder whether Hungary’s health inspections were less than stellar, thus allowing this outbreak to occur. However, officials in Budapest have a more dramatic theory: they suspect bioterrorism.
“Hungary on Thursday suggested a ‘biological attack’ as a possible source of the country’s first foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in more than half a century, which has triggered border closures and the mass slaughter of cattle in the northwest.”

In a proactive measure, animal health authorities have conducted inspections at approximately 1,000 farms across Hungary, with only four testing positive for the disease, all located in the already affected northwestern area.
“At this stage, we can say that it cannot be ruled out that the virus was not of natural origin; we may be dealing with an artificially engineered virus,” stated Gergely Gulyas, chief of staff to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, during a recent media briefing.
Responding to inquiries, Gulyas noted that he could not eliminate the possibility of this outbreak being the result of a biological attack, although he offered no information about potential perpetrators.
