Weather prompts fire warning across Canterbury

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) is urging residents in Canterbury to be extra vigilant in preventing wildfires, especially with hot and windy weather forecasted for the weekend.

This warning comes in the wake of multiple wildfires in areas such as Bridge Hill, Kirwee, West Melton, and Burnham, which posed a threat to properties and consumed hundreds of hectares of land.

As a result, the entire region is now under a restricted fire season, requiring permits for all outdoor fires.

Fenz deployed a specialized drone team to conduct thermal imaging at the Bridge Hill fire site, while firefighters worked tirelessly to contain and extinguish hotspots on Saturday morning. Crews will remain on site throughout the weekend to monitor and put out any remaining hotspots.

In addition, a separate crew is addressing a smoldering slash pile near State Highway 73, potentially causing smoke in the area.

Meanwhile, at the Burnham fireground, firefighters have identified multiple hotspots in the pine trees along State Highway 1 and are actively working to address them.

Fenz offers the following general advice:

– The entire Canterbury and Mid Canterbury regions are under a restricted fire season.

– Outdoor fires are prohibited without a permit.

– Permit holders must assess conditions carefully, particularly avoiding lighting fires in windy weather.

– Check previously burned areas for any signs of heat, as they may reignite.

– Exercise caution when performing hotworks such as grinding and welding that could produce sparks.

– Keep water nearby, avoid dry grass, and if possible, conduct hotworks in the cooler morning hours.

– Even activities like mowing can create sparks, so remain vigilant.
