New Scientist. Science news and long reads from expert journalists, covering developments in science, technology, health and the environment on the website and the magazine.

Choosing random numbers is a task that has perplexed humanity for centuries. Traditional methods like counting-out rhymes or flipping coins may seem random, but they are not truly random. The concept of true randomness is elusive because most things in the universe operate based on specific mechanisms. However, quantum mechanics introduces the element of true randomness by demonstrating that quantum entities can make entirely random choices without any predictable cause behind them.

The Colorado University Randomness Beacon, also known as CURBy, leverages this quantum randomness and has become the world’s first publicly accessible source of traceable, verifiable, truly random numbers. While the need for radical randomness may not be apparent in everyday activities like dice games, applications such as secure web connections, password generation, and machine learning rely on randomness for security and fairness.

CURBy’s quantum randomness generator utilizes pairs of entangled photons to produce truly random binary digits. This process involves measuring the polarisation of entangled photons and correlating the results to extract random numbers using a technique called Trevisan extraction. With the ability to make around 250,000 polarisation measurements per second, CURBy can generate a string of 512 truly random bits.

One of CURBy’s standout features is its traceability, achieved through blockchain mathematics to verify the origin and randomness of the numbers. The system involves a distributed network of institutions to ensure no single party has complete control over the random bits. This integration of quantum and classical physics with high-level security analyses makes CURBy a cutting-edge and reliable technology.

While traceable randomness from CURBy has numerous potential applications in areas like jury selection, lottery results, and clinical trials, it may not be suitable for generating passwords due to its public nature. Overall, the development of CURBy signifies a significant step towards integrating true randomness into various aspects of our lives, ensuring a fairer and safer future.
