When it comes to significant financial transactions, ensuring secure payments is paramount. Buyers prefer quick transfers to trustworthy recipients, while payees seek assurance that their payments are valid. Though personal checks can be used occasionally, a bank draft is often a more reliable choice for high-value deals.

Bank drafts offer a safe mechanism for facilitating large payments. This article delves into what bank drafts are, their functionality, and their advantages and disadvantages.

A bank draft—sometimes referred to as a teller’s check, bank check, or banker’s draft—is a payment method that is secured by the issuing bank. When you utilize a bank draft for a payment, the bank automatically deducts the specified amount from your account and places it into a reserve. This allows the payee to access the funds by presenting the bank draft at their own bank.

Although they resemble personal checks, bank drafts are more secure since they are backed by the issuing bank. As long as the bank is insured by the FDIC, bank drafts cannot bounce.

Both banks and credit unions issue bank drafts. Upon your request for a bank draft, the banking institution will withdraw the necessary funds from your personal account and place them into a designated reserve.

You will then receive a physical bank draft that resembles a check, which you must present to the payee. When the payee cashes the bank draft, they generally receive the reserved funds at the issuing bank swiftly, often within a day.

Be aware that obtaining a bank draft may involve a nominal fee, which typically is around $10, depending on your bank and your account type.

After you provide a bank draft to the payee, canceling it may not be feasible. The only way to reclaim the funds could be through the payee cashing the draft and returning the money to you.

There are no upper limits on bank drafts, making them ideal for substantial purchases, such as real estate or vehicles. Additionally, when you do not know the recipient well, a bank draft is often requested. Their backing by a financial institution offers assurance that the payee will receive their funds.

While bank drafts can be extremely useful in certain situations, they also come with potential drawbacks. Consider the following advantages and disadvantages before acquiring a bank draft:

  • Increased security compared to other payment forms: Unlike cash, bank drafts leave a payment trail. Their guarantee by a financial institution prevents them from bouncing, unlike personal checks.

  • No cap on the transaction amount: Many alternatives have restrictions on how much you can send. Bank drafts do not have such limits.

  • No need for the payee’s banking details: Unlike digital transfers, you don’t require the recipient’s banking information for a bank draft. The bank manages the funds until the payee deposits the draft.

  • Fast processing: Bank drafts typically clear within 24 hours, in contrast to other payment types that may take much longer.

  • Potential fees may apply: Depending on your banking institution, obtaining a bank draft could incur a fee of approximately $10.

  • Risk of loss or theft: Since bank drafts are physical documents, they can be lost, stolen, or subjected to fraud, similar to cash.

  • Challenging to cancel: Once issued, it can be difficult or even impossible to reverse a bank draft.

  • Inconvenient delivery: The need to present a physical draft to the payee may be less convenient compared to alternatives like wire transfers.

Similar to bank drafts, a money order serves as a physical payment instrument. Money orders are also backed by the institution from which they’re bought, requiring upfront payment.

However, unlike bank drafts, money orders come with transaction limits. For instance, domestic money orders in the United States are typically capped at $1,000, requiring multiple purchases for larger sums.

Another key distinction between bank drafts and money orders is their availability. Money orders can be obtained at banks or credit unions, but also at post offices and selected retail outlets.

Bank drafts and cashier’s checks share many similarities. Both are secured by the issuing institution, which makes them safer than personal checks. However, they contain distinct information.

In bank drafts, the issuer’s details appear since the bank acts on your behalf while creating the payment. In contrast, cashier’s checks display the bank’s details along with a teller’s signature.

If you’re interested in acquiring a bank draft, visit your local bank or credit union to initiate the request. Assuming sufficient funds are available, the bank will withdraw the requisite amount and set it aside in a secure account. You’ll then receive the physical draft to deliver to the payee, who can cash it at their bank.

Additionally, some banks may offer the option to order bank drafts online.
