The Kagera region of Tanzania is currently facing a suspected outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus disease, with eight reported deaths so far. The World Health Organization has confirmed nine cases in two districts, including among health workers, and is actively searching for the source of the outbreak.

Last year, Rwanda experienced a separate outbreak of Marburg virus disease, similar to Ebola, resulting in over 60 infections and at least 15 deaths by the end of November. The WHO has raised concerns about the high regional risk in Kagera due to its status as a transport hub, potentially leading to the spread of the virus to neighboring countries like Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Despite the regional threat, the global risk from Marburg virus is currently low as it does not easily transmit between people and has not crossed international borders. While cases of Marburg virus have been rare in the United States, there was a single imported case in 2008 from Uganda, where a woman became ill after visiting a bat-infested cave but did not spread the virus to others.

Marburg virus is a severe disease causing fever and bleeding disorders, with symptoms like headache, chills, rash, sore throat, and muscle aches. The disease can progress to more serious conditions such as shock, delirium, bleeding, and organ failure. It is transmitted through bodily fluids and contact with infected Egyptian rousette bats.

To protect against Marburg virus, it is essential to avoid contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, even after recovery. People in affected areas should steer clear of Egyptian rousette bats and non-human primates to prevent the spread of the disease. Regular testing and monitoring are crucial in controlling outbreaks and preventing further transmission.
