The recent cancellation of Netflix’s “Boots” after just one season was a disappointment for many fans, as the groundbreaking coming-of-age queer drama series set in the Marine Corps was praised for its representation and storytelling. The show was also notable for being the final project executive produced by TV legend Norman Lear, who had helped develop the project before his passing in December 2023.

Brent Miller, who served as Lear’s producing partner and ran his Act III Productions, expressed his disappointment with Variety over the show’s cancellation but also shared his pride in the work that was done on “Boots.” He mentioned that the creator, Andy Parker, had plans to take the characters to war in a potential second season.

“Boots” was based on Greg Cope White’s book “The Pink Marine” and followed the story of Cameron Cope, played by Miles Heizer, and his best friend Ray McAffey, played by Liam Oh, as they navigate the challenges of boot camp and the Marine Corps while coming to terms with their identities in a time when LGBTQ individuals were banned from the military.

The news of the cancellation was overshadowed by the tragic deaths of Rob and Michelle Reiner for the Lear family. Miller acknowledged that Norman Lear would have been disappointed by the cancellation but grateful for the opportunity to make the show and its impact on viewers worldwide. He mentioned that Lear would have encouraged efforts to find a new home for the show and would have urged fans to voice their support for a potential second season.

The timing of Lear’s final production ending coinciding with the news of the Reiners’ deaths was a poignant moment, as Lear had a close relationship with the family and had worked with Rob Reiner on projects like “All in the Family” and “The Princess Bride.” The Lear family expressed their devastation over the loss of Rob and Michele Reiner, emphasizing their contributions to making the world a better place through their art, activism, philanthropy, and love for family and friends.

In conclusion, the cancellation of “Boots” marked the end of an era for Norman Lear’s production legacy, but the impact of the show and the memories of his collaborations with talented individuals like the Reiners will continue to resonate in the entertainment industry.
